This legendary “Peruvian Ginseng” may help with fertility & libido conditions without altering sex hormone status.
Black Maca is a root native to the Andean plateaus of Peru that’s part of the cruciferous family (think broccoli or cabbage). While it’s not technically a ginseng, Maca is commonly referred to as “Peruvian Ginseng” for its A) Primarily Peruvian location, and B) Reputation as a life-giving adaptogenic herb–most of which stems from its reputation as a “high-altitude” remedy for the stresses of “high-altitude” living.
These actions mirror bio-actions of other adaptogenic ginsengs and high-altitude herbs (namely Rhodiola) that are believed to aid sexual function, in addition to sex hormone status & general sexual health. And while Maca fits the profile of a T-boosting adaptogen, its bio-actions on male health (i.e. male hormones) don’t quite meet the adaptogenic modus operandi.
Maca root has three colors: yellow, black, and red. While they share more similarities than differences, each type has its own unique properties and benefits.
POWER OF BLACK MACA
Black Maca is also known as “men’s Maca” because of its positive effects in increasing potency among men. It has seen a rise in popularity recently because of its impact on memory, energy and mood, bone health, and sperm count.
A 2009 study from the Peruvian University found that black Maca was the best option of the three species of root for increased sperm production as well as libido. A more recent study from 2013 reported similar findings as well.
Black Maca root makes up about 15% of yearly Maca root harvests. So while it may be more expensive than other types of Maca, some may find the benefits to be invaluable.
Besides stimulating male potency and vigor, there are other advantages to consuming black Maca as well:
Better athletic performance and increased strength and stamina
Improved memory skills and focus
Greater bone density
Great source of calcium that increases bone density and keeps teeth strong
Popular supplement for bodybuilders and athletes
Increases muscle, strength, energy, and exercise performance
High source of protein
It's anabolic, which means constructive metabolism or naturally building up muscle
Black represents our masculine or external energy, that which strengthens, endures, and vitalizes. Traditionally it is used to prevent and improve conditions such as brain fog, fatigue, depression, and loss of coordination and strength. It acts to enhance memory, regenerates brain function, gives energy, improves physical performance, and mental focus, is a natural antidepressant, and regulates and strengthens the male reproductive organs. Clinical studies have shown black maca to be the most effective for improving memory function, learning, and brain clarity, as well as improving athletic performance. For men black maca increased sperm production and function as well as male libido. So both men and women have similar and yet different positive benefits for consuming black maca, and both men and women need to nourish their masculine energy.
Improves Fertility & Libido While Helping To Relieve Erectile Dysfunction
One of the lesser-known benefits of Maca powder for men includes helping improve fertility, libido, and erectile dysfunction. Traditionally taken as an aphrodisiac, Maca is a food that stimulates sexual desire. For men with mild erectile dysfunction, studies show a significant improvement after incorporating this superfood.
The nutrients macaenes and macamides found in Black Maca Root support a healthy libido for men. It is proven to enhance semen quality in both healthy and infertile men. Black Maca also increases the amount, flow, and volume of sperm explicitly.
Originally Black Maca was taken as an aphrodisiac
Improves semen quality
Increases count, motility, and quantity of sperm (mainly black, some yellow)
Enhances sexual desire
Relief of mild ED
An adaptogen that balances hormones
A study published in 2018 compared the functional biological activities of the 3 main phenotypes of Maca. The study concluded that the lipids and polysaccharides of black maca showed a higher antioxidant effect than red and yellow. Red was less than 10% behind black and yellow was about 25%. Metabolism
A study published in “Frontiers in Pharmacology” in 2018 found that Black Maca extract prevents metabolism disorders by helping regulate glucose, which is an important metabolite for humans. The brain requires about 50% of its calories from glucose and red blood cells subsist exclusively on glucose. This study showed that Black Maca enhances the production of glucose in the body and may thereby support a healthier metabolism.
From 2006 to 2016 there have been several significant independent studies done on how black-colored roots of maca affect both sperm production and sperm motility. The first significant study, published in 2006, found that Black Maca was the only color to effectively support the production of sperm among rats tested. It also found that “Black Maca affects sperm count as early as 1 day after the beginning of treatment.” A second study from 2006 found that “...black maca increased epididymal sperm count after 84 days of treatment” in the male rats studied. It also concluded that compared to other colors of maca, “black maca appeared to have a more beneficial effect on sperm counts and epididymal sperm motility.” Similar results were found in 2016 with an increase in daily sperm production. This study, using mice, found that sperm motility as well as sexual dysfunction was affected positively by adding black maca root to the animals’ diet over the course of 12 weeks.
In 2010 a team of 6 researchers reported that Red and Black Maca were found to be the best at improving and protecting bone structure, especially in mice that had their ovaries removed.
Improving Mood, Learning, and Concentration
In 2006 a Peruvian team observed that while all maca colors contributed favorably to reducing depression, black maca also improved the learning and concentration abilities of laboratory mice. And a more recent study from 2016 from an esteemed and larger group of international researchers found that black maca improved mood as well as overall “quality of life.”
